Bermuda 2000 ...be part of it!

Orbis World Computer Bridge Championships
The third world computer bridge championships will be held from January 16-21, 2000 as part of the Orbis World Bridge Championships. The event will be called the Orbis World Computer Bridge Championships and will pit the best computer bridge programs from around the world against each other.

Many of the world’s best computer bridge programs have already registered for the event, including GIB, Bridge Baron, and Meadowlark, from the United States, Q-Plus from Germany, Micro Bridge from Japan, and Blue Chip Bridge from England, and WBridge5 from France.

This will be an open competition, and new participants will be welcome until the registration deadline of December 1, 1999.

Format


The contest will consist of a round robin, followed by semifinals and finals, as follows:

Round Robin January 16-18

    10-board matches against each opponent. IMP scoring converted to Victory Points using 20-VP scale. Top four (4) qualify for semifinals

Semifinals January 19

    38 + 10 boards from round robin. Winner of round robin plays 3rd or 4th place finisher, whichever it has the greatest carryover against. 38 boards, IMP scoring, added to 100% IMP score from 10-board round robin IMP score against semifinals’ opponent.

Finals January 20

    54 + 10 boards from round robin. 54 boards, IMP scoring, added to 100% IMP score from 10-board round robin IMP score against Finals’ opponent.

Judges: To be named

A 3 judge panel will rule on matters sent to it by the Coordinator and make a final decision. The Coordinator and Tournament Director may sit in deliberations as nonvoting participants.


Prize money

There will be a total of US$6,000 prize money. Of this US$5,500 will awarded to competitors in the Orbis World Computer Bridge Championships, as follows:

    1st US$2,000
    2nd US$1,250
    3rd US$750
    4th US$500
    5th/8th US$250

In addition there will be a bidding contest, to take place at the players’ leisure, between January 17-20, with prize money amounting to US$500 awarded as follows:

    1st US$250
    2nd US$150
    3rd US$100


Past Winners

Last year’s championships was held at the ACBL’s summer North American Bridge Championships in Chicago. The seven leading bridge programs from around the world entered. These were Q-plus from Germany, Micro Bridge from Japan, Blue Chip Bridge from England, and Meadowlark Bridge, Bridge Baron, GIB and Bridge Genii from the United States. GIB won that event, with Q-Plus coming in second.

Bridge Baron, another leading contender for this year’s championship, won the first World Championship, held at the 1997 summer NABC in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Micro Bridge was a close second.
