The d’Orsi Seniors Trophy was inaugurated in 2001. This event takes place every odd numbered year in conjunction with the Bermuda Bowl and the Venice Cup. In 2005 the event took the name of the WBF Past President Ernesto d’Orsi who presented the Trophy and provided replicas for the winners.

In the d’Orsi Trophy, Poland outscored India on each of the first three sets of the final and maintained their advantage to the end, winning 239-194.
Apolinary Kowalski took his ninth World Championship medal, his third gold after the Mixed pairs in 1994 and the Senior teams in 2014. Jacek Romański is up to eight medals, it is his third gold after the Olympiad in 1984 and the Senior teams in 2014. Michał Kwiecień now has seven medals, also including three golds (Open pairs in 1998 and Senior teams in 2018). Victor Markowicz is also up to seven medals, all of them at Seniors events. It is only his second gold. Alain Levy has six medals, including three Open team golds. Philippe Soulet has five, including two Open team golds (1980 and ‘82). Steen Schou is up to four medals, including gold in the d’Orsi Trophy two years ago.
Dorthe Schaltz has three medals, with gold in the Women’s team Olympiad in 1988 and bronze at Senior teams in 2016. Peter also has three medals, bronze in the Open teams in 1984 and the two Senior teams together with his wife. Marc Bompis now has a full set, after gold in Open teams in 1996 and silver in the Mixed Pairs in 1998. Rajesh Dalal previously won bronze in the Open teams in 1988. Sukarnal Das and Subrata Saha were on the Indian team that won bronze in the d’Orsi Trophy in 2019. Jørgen Hansen won gold in the d’Orsi Trophy in 2019. He also won bronze in the Senior teams at the World Games in 2016. Dominique Pilon previously won gold in the open teams in 1982. Dennis Koch-Palmund won bronze in the Open team Olympiad in 1996. Włodzimierz Starkowski previously won the Open teams in 2014. Krzysztof Moszczyński had a bronze in the Open teams of 1989.
This is India’s first-ever silver medal, they previously won four bronzes.

After a tremendous struggle USA finally overcame the resistence of Italy in the final of the d’Orsi Trophy (the seventh time the title has gone to the USA) while Sweden powered past India to collect the bronze.

The final of the d’Orsi Trophy saw a comfortable win for USA1, beating Sweden 263-126.3, giving Hemant Lall the title of Senior Grand Master. Poland also cruised to a comfortable victory over USA2 for the bronze medal.

The result of the Championship in Bali was: 1st Germany, 2nd USA, 3rd Poland. Following an accusation of improper behaviour presented by the USA Team against the German Pair Elinescu-Wladow during the Final between Germany and USA, a disciplinary procedure was initiated and with
a decision of the Disciplinary Commission, confirmed by the Disciplinary Appeal Tribunal, Michael Elinescu and Entscho Wladow were found guilty of cheating and consequently suspended. The Executive Council in Sanya, October 2014, decided to revoke the title and the medals to the German Team and enforced the new ranking.

In Veldhoven the Senior Series was a championship for strong hearts, because of the tremendous emotions lived through and offered to the spectators by the players during both the semi-final and the final. At the end of two memorable and exciting matches, France won its first Senior title defeating Poland 197-196.3 in the semifinal and USA 2 by 165-160.3 in the final, recovering on the very last board.

In São Paulo, in each of the three main events, the 22 teams played a complete round robin of 16-board matches, three a day for seven days, followed by 96-board quarter and semi-finals. The freshly-minted d’Orsi Senior Trophy final was a two-day 96- deal match.
England had to come back from a serious deficit against their Senior Trophy opponents from Poland. After falling behind 59-1 in the first set (62.67 including carryover), England knuckled down and played tough the rest of the way, particularly on the Friday, when they surrendered only 47 IMPs over 48 boards to emerge with a 187-163.67 victory.
England’s win was the first in the history of the event for a non-USA squad. Indonesia achieved the podium for the third consecutive time.

USA and Indonesia once again met in the final and Indonesia withdrew after 80 deals, trailing 205-127 conceding victory to the USA for the fourth consecutive time. Roger Bates and Grant Baze won their third Senior Trophy.

Eight teams from four Zonal Conferences competed in the first Senior Trophy, which consisted of a double round robin followed by semi-finals and finals. The Championship was won by USA II who
took the crown by defeating Poland. FRANCE took the bronze medal by defeating USA I.
